About African meditations
I`m a South African and enjoy using the surroundings as inspiration for my paintings of light and colour moving accross the canvas. South Africa is a land of many contrasts and with a big heart.
The significant features are the wide open spaces and wide horizon. The soil in many areas is a ruddy brown, from the iron deposits. For a large part of the country rainfall is sparing and water is a valuable commodity. But the most prominent feature in my opinion is the intensity of the light.
The sunlight here is so intense. Tracking the sun as it races across the sky is my favourite theme and I return to it again and again. The sun can shine through puffs of cloud as the it sinks to the horizon or peer around huge cauliflowers as thunderclouds builds up in the late afternoon.
I am an amateur photographer and where I travel, my camera goes with. I work from photos and try to capture the essence of light and splash of colour.
I grew up in the Little Karoo, in a town called Oudtshoorn, which nestles between two mountain ranges, the mighty Swartberg on the one side and the Outeniqwa range on the other. Other favourite places are along the Garden route, which winds around the sea and Hogsback, a small hideaway in the Amatola moutains.
My favourite medium is acrylics on canvas. These works are for sale. Please refer to the Contact me section for order details.
